You know, a smart, organized person would have written this post up in advanced and had it scheduled to go live automatically.

I am apparently not that person.

Tonight I've got DnD with friends, and have been working on refreshing myself with the rules. We're playing 3.5 and I stopped playing somewhere around the original or AD&D version, with a lot of GURPS mixed in. I'm picking it back up, though. Yay! I still have trouble figuring modifiers sometimes, because we weren't using the D20 system way back then. (Geez, that makes me feel fracking old! LOL)

Also, Dexter -- WHAT THE FUCK??? I am really pissed off. I thought no show could come up with a series end worse than The Sopranos did.

I was, sadly, wrong.

If you haven't watched all of Dexter, stop at about season 4. Seriously. Just stop.

And do NOT download IOS7 yet. UGH. I made the mistake of going ahead and putting it on my iPad, and I. HATE. IT. In addition to it looking cheesy, they took away the swipe-to-delete function on email, and that REALLY pisses me off. I should have known better not to update, but I did it anyway. I should have learned. I will NOT be updating my iPhone 4S anytime soon. GRRR!

I also have a new release today! Hope Heals is live on BookStrand's site. Hope Heals on BookStrand

People ask me if I pull from real life for my books, and this book is a prime example of that. In my mind, the Heckmans' property is the property my dad's parents used to own while I was growing up in, yes, Odessa, Florida. My grandmother's sister lived next door (in Betty's house, in my mind). They had some sort of long-term war going on, however. My grandmother took great pride in waiting to burn leaves and stuff until the wind was just right and blowing smoke over toward her sister's house. LOL Next door to them, on the same property, was a tiny wood house built by my great-grandparents'. Although, in my revisionist history I've transformed that into the large, spacious home the Hope men now own.

Nope, no goats, chickens, pigs, horses, or steers (with or without tennis balls) in sight, although we did have dogs. And they didn't have a pool, just a lake. (Why on earth would they have a pool when they had a lake? LOL seriously, that was their mindset.)

I remember lots of times my dad loading up a couple of mowers (they sold and repaired them) on the trailer, and taking me and my sister over there, and we'd spend hours happily zooming around and mowing.

Yeah, who'd a thunk free child labor could have so much fun? LOL We only lived a few minutes away from them, and had fun swimming in the lake. I learned how to water ski on that lake.

The shop Dana works at really exists, although the man who runs it, his name is Rick, and he's awwwweeeesoooommme. (In fact, I have an appointment with him later this week. Time for more blue highlights. LOL)

One of the highlights of my grandmother's life was when former Tampa Bay Buccaneer bought a house one property over from them and moved in. She proudly showed us a couple of large frames she scavenged from their garbage, giggling that they used to belong to someone famous. (I don't know if she ever reused those frames or not, or just enjoyed knowing they were now hers and had been touched by fame.)

They eventually sold that property and moved farther north in the state to be closer to my aunt. It no longer resembles the house they owned, because the new owners gutted, rebuilt, and expanded, and added a barn and horses. The little wooden house is also gone. My grand-aunt's house is still there, owned by her son. But my memories of the place will live on.

Books are funny things. Sometimes, I'll get a single line of dialogue or snippet of an idea, or even a title. Sometimes, it's a character, or more than one character, but no plot. Sometimes, the whole idea slams into me and forces me to write it out of my brain just to shut it the hell up.

Hope Heals was the latter. I was lying in bed with Hubby one night, trying to go to sleep, when the scene where Sarah is questioning her dad about Big Mac's tennis ball slammed into my mind. My eyes popped open and in five minutes, the whole plot was THERE. I had to get up, get my laptop, and start writing. I got that scene written immediately, which was enough to satisfy "the voices," apparently, into letting me go to sleep.

I got up the next morning, read through it, and still thought it was good. Although I wasn't sure it was as funny as I thought it was. So I called Hubby in, he read it, and laughed his ass off.

If  I can make him laugh out loud, then I know it's funny.

So that's how Hope Heals made it to life, asshole ninja assassin pet goats and all. :) I hope you enjoy it.

And yes, there likely will be more stories from that gang in the future. Nothing concrete from "the voices" yet, but they're rumbling. My other stories that this one bumped are still chattering more loudly at me, so I'm back to working on those.

"Stay calm, have courage, and wait for signs."

That's one of my favorite quotes. I don't know if Craig Johnson, author of the Longmire series of books, got it from somewhere else or not, but I don't care.

This week has been a mix of that. Usually, release day weeks are, for me, a happy time. Especially one a week after FetCon.

Having to say goodbye to our old Lab, Scudder, on Tuesday afternoon has pretty much sucked the joy out of it for me.

So all I can do is...

Stay calm, have courage, and wait for signs.

That's not always easy to do, but I'm trying.

With indie publishing being what it is, flexible and fast, I was able to insert a modified dedication to Scudder (who was the inspiration for Doogie in the book) into Pinch Me.

This book is one I've actually had on the burner for...well, over ten years. I got the idea for it from the Barenaked Ladies' song of the same title. (I've trimmed the lyrics down to hit the highlights.)

The idea for the story immediately smacked me between the eyes. That happens frequently. (Taking it beyond an idea is a different story.) Unfortunately, it sort of languished despite having most of it written. I just couldn't shake the feeling that it was missing something. Yeah, it was a complete story, lots of conflict, lots of action, lots of energy.

But...

Yawn.

I'd pull it out every so often and look at it and then put it away again. I honestly didn't know what it was missing, and while I thought maybe I'd go ahead and self-pub it as a romantic mystery, I just...

Didn't know.

Fast forward to Bash this year, at the end of May. (It's an annual BDSM convention here in the area.) I was literally finishing up Two Geeks and Their Girl to submit it when we got there. And at one point during some downtime, I pulled open the file for Pinch Me.

And it smacked me between the eyes what was missing.

I immediately rewrote the first and second chapters in less than an hour and the rest of the story just automagically filled out the "missing bits" in my brain.

Yes, I'll be the first to admit the amnesia trope is common. (To be fair, it wasn't AS common when I first got the idea for it years ago. LOL And I'd originally wrote it as a suspense, not a romance.) But what happens when a woman not only has to try to regain her memory, but her fiance is her Master and is afraid to tell her about that part of their life?

And now (channelling Paul Harvey) you know...the rest of the story. LOL

So I hope you enjoy Pinch Me. It also allowed me a chance to revisit and update other characters from other books in what I've now dubbed the Suncoast Society series.

Suncoast Society series reading order.

Coming 8/23/13.

I'm frequently asked about the "correct" reading order for the Suncoast Society series. When I first started writing them, they were only connected by theme (BDSM) and not by characters. But the characters, as they so often do, took on a life of their own and decided they were more than just stories passing each other in file folders on my computer's hard drive.

The characters started walking through each others' books.

Tony Daniels, of course, was the first "offender," so to speak. He appeared in both Domme by Default and The Reluctant Dom at first. I didn't have plans to give him his own story.

Well, rather, HE hadn't spoken up with his own story. But eventually he did. Giving me The Denim Dom. And he makes an appearance in Two Geeks and Their Girl (but in a vanilla way).

He also plays an important role in Pinch Me, coming 8/23 from Siren-BookStrand.

So while all the books in this series are standalone stories in their own right, I'm going to suggest a preferred reading order simply to avoid one book revealing spoilers about other books. This is more a chronological order.

4. The Reluctant Dom
5. The Denim Dom
6. Pinch Me (coming 8/23/13)

Ray, Oot, and kitten from Safe Harbor also appear in Love Slave for Two: Beginnings, and in kitten's tale. While kitten's tale is BDSM, it's not technically part of the Suncoast Society series.

If you don't read them in the "right" order, really, it's not going to hurt anything. Each book focuses on a different set of main characters, with other characters in supporting roles. But now that the characters have made it plain to me that they're all going in this direction, the books will be more chronological in relation to each other. Still all standalone works, but you might come across spoilers if read in a non-chronological order.

WIP Wednesday: Pinch Me

Today's WIP Wednesday is from a mf BDSM story set in my Suncoast Society world, called Pinch Me. It's unedited, so please excuse typos.

Set-up: Laura Spaulding wakes up in the hospital after being attacked...with absolutely no memory of what happened--or even who she is. What her fiance, Rob, can't tell her yet, is that they are a Master/slave couple. Now Laura has to fight to get her memory back before the psycho who tried to kill her strikes again. And Rob has to win her heart all over again before he can even think about revealing the depth of their relationship to her.

Rob gave her another sad smile. She wondered if he always looked so sad, or if it was due to the circumstances. “I didn’t even think to ask if they were keeping you on a restricted diet when I talked to Tony earlier.”

“Who are they?” she asked. “The people coming to visit.” The older woman, Carol, she jostled a few memories, but they felt like very old ones. Very faded, disjointed, like she was a kid when they happened.

At least, she hoped they were true memories and not just wishful thinking on her part as they’d gone through photos together.

“Tony and Shayla Daniels.”

“How did I meet them?”

“You’ve known them for several years. They’re the friends who introduced us. You and Shayla are extremely close. Best friends.”

She felt like maybe he was holding something back, but it didn’t feel bad, or like he was lying.

She wasn’t sure how she knew that, or if it was simply more mental gymnastics courtesy of her battered brain, but she let it go for now.

“Why haven’t more people come to see me?” She feared the answer.

“Oh, sweetie, I’ve told people to stay away for now. You were in the ICU, and now…”

He didn’t finish.

He didn’t have to.

“Because I can’t remember them anyway,” she quietly said.

He let out a sigh as he nodded. “I didn’t want you to get overwhelmed. And…” She forced herself not to flinch away from him as he reached out and gently stroked her cheek with the backs of his fingers. “I knew you wouldn’t want a lot of people seeing you like this.”

“You’re seeing me like this.” She felt an instinctive urge to tip her face toward his hand, to nuzzle against it.

Familiar.

She closed her eyes and hoped more came to her, but it didn’t.

For now, she’d settle for that little beacon of goodness in the middle of the sea of black that still comprised most of her memories.

“That’s because I love you. You’re my life. Good luck trying to keep me from your side.”

“What about the couple bringing dinner? Would I want them seeing me like this?”

“They’re like family to us,” he said. “You wouldn’t care what condition they saw you in.”

The door opened again and the deputy poked his head inside. “Rob, there’s a couple here to see Laura.”

“Send them in.” He stood to greet them. Laura clutched at the sheet and waited for them to get all the way in.

They did feel familiar.

More importantly, like Carol earlier, they felt safe.

The man, Tony Daniels, was a little taller than Rob and had green eyes, dark hair, and a friendly smile. Even though he had his arms full of take-out bags, he accepted an awkward one-armed hug from Rob. His wife, Shayla, had hazel eyes and brown hair down past her shoulders.

She also noticed Shayla wore a gold necklace with a heart-shaped tag on it. Something about the look of it pulled a wistful pang from deep in Laura’s heart, and her hand flew to her throat again, helplessly fluttering against the empty real estate there.

I need to remember to ask Rob about that.

Tony put the bags down on the bed tray. “We come bearing food,” he joked.

“Thank you,” Laura said. “Rob told me you were bringing dinner.”

Shayla hesitantly walked around the bed to the other side. The woman looked like she was on the verge of tears. “May I hug you?” she softly asked Laura.

Laura pulled back the sheet and turned to sit on the edge of the bed. Shayla tentatively wrapped her arms around her as Laura did the same.

She heard Shayla sniffle. “I love you so much, sister,” she whispered in her ear. “I don’t know what I would have done if I’d lost you.”

A wave of emotion Laura couldn’t process swept through her. She let out a sob of her own as she tightly clutched Shayla and they cried together.

Snippet Saturday: "Contractual Obligation"

Tony admitted his curiosity had run overtime after her phone call the night before. Over the phone Shayla sounded more timid than ever, a woman wanting to ask something and apparently afraid to spit it out. He’d found her discomfort amusing and endearing.

Not to mention the sadist in him got a little twist out of it in the bargain.

He knew she’d spent the day before with Leah, Loren, Tilly, and Clarisse. He wouldn’t be nosy and ask what they talked about, but he couldn’t help wondering if her call to him was a result of it.

She laced her hands together in front of her on the table, her eyes trained on them. When she spoke, her voice sounded so soft he had to sit forward to hear her.

“You said you’ve trained submissives before,” she said.

He slowly nodded and folded his arms on the table in front of him. “Yes?”

“And you teach, too? I mean, I know you teach the whip class, but you teach other stuff.”

“Yes?”

“How much do you charge?”

He thought maybe he’d misheard her. “I don’t understand.”

She still wouldn’t look at him. “How much do you charge to train a submissive?”

“I don’t.”

That forced her gaze up to his before it dropped to her hands again. “But I thought you said—”

“When I train a submissive, it’s because myself and the person have reached a mutual agreement to pursue that. That’s personal, not a business transaction. I’ve never charged to train a submissive. She’d been rejected somewhere down the line and had taken a massive hit to her self-esteem as a result. He didn’t know exactly how or why, but he’d seen it plenty of times before in others and recognized it all too well.

Of course, he knew he could be wrong, but he doubted it.

“Is this really just for your story? No other reason?”

She nodded.

“Is any of it for you personally?”

He thought at first she wasn’t going to answer him. Then she softly said, “I don’t know. Maybe.”

He allowed himself to slowly lean back in his seat, his palms flat on his thighs under the table. He studied her, noticing the way her gaze dove away from him, down and to the side again, to the dessert menu propped up at the end of the table by the window.

I’ll have to work on that first. She would have to learn to accept direct eye contact with him, to hold and maintain it no matter how uncomfortable it might feel to her.

He realized what he’d just thought and knew regardless of the outcome, he’d probably already made up his mind the other night when they were talking at the club.

He’d just never thought he’d have a chance to make some of those fantasies come true.

“Okay,” he said. “I’ll do it.”
